CANNONBALL
SINGLE

theeastjinx

Energy, power, happiness, we're feeling like sitting on a cannonball. So we added some flutes, we enhanced the guitars, we put some cristal sounds at the intro and we mixed a Moog synth in the refrain. Good melodies and cool trumpet solo of Christoph Titz !

Follow the link : christophtitz.de

Lyrics & voices : Klaus Niessen

My pockets are full of money
And credit cards
After three days, hard work is done
Feel like the winner of the MTV award
Get me a taxi, a big limousine
I’m a material guy
Smokin' cigars, livin' my dream
And now my mouth is dry

Tonight! I feel like sittin' on a cannonball
Tonight! I feel like I'm gonna explode soon
Tonight! I feel like sittin' on a cannonball
Tonight! Ifeel like I am pure dynamite

I am the king on the dance floor
Burnin' rubber, burnin' rum
Tonight I'll party up till I can party no more
I am the bass ! I am the drum !
Night after night, day after day
Life is the flight of your time, they say
Life seems so short if you got too much energy
Emergency ! Where is the party ?

Tonight! I feel like sittin' on a cannonball
Tonight! I feel like I'm gonna explode soon
Tonight! I feel like sittin' on a cannonball
Tonight! Ifeel like I am pure dynamite

THE SANDMAN
TRIBUTE

theeastjinx

A brief melodic tribute to Mark Sandman (Morphine), who died far too soon, 25 years ago.

Beyond the journalist's words, a haunting, repeated response, until the man and his work completely disappeared, by reducing the use of his bass strings to a minimalism close to a certain musical breakdown, then playing a loud and powerful music.

Mark understood the meaning of the passing time... Like the sand flowing through an hourglass.

Music : Luc G. Meessen
Lyrics & voices : Bootleg of a broadcasted interview with Mark Sandman, 1999

Mix & end mastering : Laurent Roo Eyen @ Koko Studio

NAKED IN THE GARDEN
SINGLE

theeastjinx

Between rock and FM punk. Totally re-amped, remixed and re-mastered by Roo & me. Looking forward to releasing it. Coming out soon.

Lyrics & voices : Klaus Niessen

I remember we did so fine
The sky was blue and the grass grew high
We knew that the clouds were gone
And the sun would shine forever
Chillin' in the shades, makin' love in a bed of flowers
I think about it and I smile

Naked in the garden
Together as one
Playin' games in the sun
Naked in the garden
Havin' a whole lotta fun

Passin' time with Italian wine
'cause the french were tastin' nukes
And then at night by candlelight
I had to put on my suit
Enjoyin' every single second
As a gift from big mama earth yeah
I think about it and I smile

HOW
SINGLE

theeastjinx

Lost in an unknown city, a musician plays piano all night long and forgets about the life passing by...

Lyrics & voices : Klaus Niessen

It's five o'clock in the morning and I'm not tired
I worked all day and I've been dancin’ the night away
But it's too hot to sleep and I'm on a live wire
It's not that I feel bad
It's not that I feel sad
It's just because...

How I miss my piano, here in this strange town
How I miss my piano, it really gets me down
How I miss my piano, when everybody’s talking loud
How I miss my piano, I got no one to talk to...

The sun comes up and I’m on my way to work again
To make some money to prove that I can make sense
Watchin’ the city wakin’ up and gettin’ busy
Sometimes it seems there's too many questions comin' up
It's not that I feel bad
It's not that I feel sad...

How I miss my piano, here in this strange town
How I miss my piano, it really gets me down
How I miss my piano, when everybody’s talking loud
How I miss my piano, I got no one to talk to...

SMILE
REMIX

theeastjinx

Here is an acoustic extract of the studio session we made for EMI Electrola. Remixed, re-amped and mastered by Roo and by me.

We deleted the drum tracks and put the violins on the end of the song.

It does the job. Trying to keep your smile...

This single reached a high level of rotations on radios in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium...

Lyrics & voices : Klaus Niessen

And when they go to blow off the planet, I need you by my side
Feet on the ground, head in the sky
We'll be strong and we could fly

I would be lyin’, sayin' that I know which way to go
I should be cryin’, when I see what's goin' on
Well, I'm not blind but I'm not inspired by tragedies
I'm doin' fine, tryin’ to keep my smile

And when the mountains stumble down, and the winds start to blow
I could be you, you can be me
I'll take care of your sleep
v I would be lyin’, sayin' that I know which way to go
I should be cryin’, when I see what's goin' on
Well, I'm not blind but I'm not inspired by tragedies
I'm doin' fine, tryin’ to keep my smile

Every hour, every minute, every time

RADIO
EXTENDED VERSION

theeastjinx

Radio...

First composed, played and recorded for EMI Germany and his label Electrola at the famous Thommy Hein TonStudio in Kreuzberg, Berlin. With and for the band called The Mighty Sleepwalkers.

I took the song back. I added some notes and noises and we remastered the whole song.

As a critique of a modern society whose members are increasingly lacking recognition and immediate fame, the song deliberately takes the vintage but inspiring path of acoustic songwriting.

Lyrics & voices : Klaus Niessen

I’m sittin’ home alone in front of the radio
Waitin’ for a special song to come
Just for me and for my fun

I put on the phones then I put them back
Turn on the speakers, wanna hear that track
Immediately

I switch from station to station, every day all over every nation
My girl and my friends are sittin’ in the sun
And talkin’ laugh and havin’ fun

But me, poor little m***f*** son
I’m the one in front of the radio
When I’m waitin’ for a special song to come

There’s nothin’ to compare to
I’m the one in front of the radio
Waitin’ for a special song

They’re talkin’ about sex, they’re talkin’ about flowers
They’re talkin’ about the wrong tracks, hour after hour
I switch the program, I’ve got the power

I don’t hear any knockin’ on my door,
don’t listen to the phone ringin’ anymore
I don’t eat, I don’t drink, I don’t sleep, I don’t think

There’s nothin’ to compare to
I’m the one in front of the radio
Waitin’ for a special song

Music : Luc G. Meessen

SO MANY THINGS
REMIX

theeastjinx

The next one !

Still composed and recorded for EMI Germany and his label Electrola at the fabulous Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg (Stuttgart). For the band called The Mighty Sleepwalkers.

I took the song back. I added some notes and noises, and we remixed & remastered the whole song during long hours.

This single reached a high level of rotations on radios in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium...

Lyrics & voices : Klaus Niessen

It's nice to see, won’t you go for a swim with me
I always try to be, no time to sleep
No money, no matter, so many pictures
In my mind, mind to remember me

There's so many things goin' on in my mind
And I’ve danced on to many parties last time
The time’s gettin' weird, but my head must be cleared
I'll invite you, let's waste our time, together, together

Just like on T.V., if you wanna change
Don’t you know that you're changin' already
It might seem so easy, but what I need is a perfect time
To relax and feel free

There's so many things goin' on in my mind
And I’ve danced on to many parties last time
The time’s gettin' weird, but my head must be cleared
I'll invite you, let's waste our time, together, together

Money for flowers, because flowers surround us
I try to find out, I hear you talkin’
Makin' love in a traffic jam, love…

I think about communication, unlubrificated love can be dangerous
Love can be dangerous

There's so many things goin' on in my mind
And I’ve danced on to many parties last time
The time's gettin' weird, but my head must be cleared
I'll invite you, let's waste our time, together, together

HEARTBEAT feat. ZOP HOPOP
RADIO EDIT

theeastjinx

Second single for the band, for the label ! And we’re proud to mention that Sacha Toorop joined the band ! As Zop Hopop !

First composed on my old Kurzweil, Heartbeat quickly became an obsession : a pastel melody joined to a 126bpm disco rhythm, reverbs and sounds coming straight from the 80’s. A sad cheerfulness…

And when Sacha sent me the text and the imagined voice, on this dark evening of November 2020, emotions immediately arose. We had the thing! Simply spectacular.

Two months later, we went to the studio to record all the voices with a bunch of top class microphones.

But after the session, we had two versions of the song.

The first one with a taste of alternative music and the other, with a delightful disco feeling. We worked on this second version to release our radio edit version.

Love sometimes leads us to surreal situations... between dream and reality !

Lyrics & voices : Zop Hopop aka Sacha Toorop

From here to the sound of your heartbeat
I don’t want to solve myself

Down by your own mise en abime
I’m your machine
Even in your sleepless night, I am glowing I’m your machine, I’m your machine
Wouldn’t it be the night? Tonight’s the night

From here to the sound of your heartbeat I don’t want to solve myself
I don’t wanna loose you now

Down by the pathway of your synapse
I am your beauty, I am your beauty
You gave me so much, now I get you
You’re my beauty, now you’re my slave... tonight !

The news feed’s scrolling under the bridges
Life is not stoppin’over the fields.
Heroes are missing behind the scene,
Dare you say you love me ?
When it’s all done, when it’s all gone...

From here to the sound of your heartbeat, I don’t want to solve myself,
I don’t wanna loose you now...

OH MAN, THIS MOBY ONE CANNO' BE
RADIO EDIT

theeastjinx

First single for us in our brand new label !

And we start with a pun…

Composed in… and coming straight from New York City.

Walking through the rainy streets, the feet on the ground, the head in the sky, searching for urban feelings… I heard the bass notes pouring down the walls of those crazy buildings. I heard the cab drivers screaming… I heard the sirens of the firemen in front of the Electro Harmonix factory… I heard even the beating heart of the city and its citizens, as we walked to the Upper East Side to buy some music gears…

I fixed some harmonic issues and had the idea to fill the song with a slight percussion loop like David Byrne used to do.

In the plane that brought us back in Europe, I’ve completed the song that we’ve recorded 3 years after by Roo.

BIO

Founded back in 1996 by Nikolaus Niessen, THE MIGHTY SLEEPWALKERS from Aachen, the cultural melting pot at the border triangle of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, can look back upon a major deal at EMI Electrola, a co-operation with the German publisher KICK / Trend Verlag, the Belgian distributor BANG and the booking agency A.S.S. Concerts in Hamburg, Germany. This eventful history also included the publication of a number of records as well as more than 500 gigs in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Spain.

The band initially started out as a trio (Nikolaus Niessen – Voice and Cajon, Achim Jenik – double bass and Luc G. Meessen – acoustic guitar) performing catchy and cool pop songs of their own writing, as well as unconventional cover interpretations of songs by various musicians from Iggy Pop to James Brown. The debut album "Can't sleep, gotta walk" published in 1997 gained cult status and is still an absolute must-have among Mighty fans.

In the years to follow, the cast was somewhat reshuffled.

The band was upgraded to a quartet with Bernd vom Dorp’s pulsing drums in 1998 while Frank Lennartz took over the low frequency strings in 2000. During their time with EMI Electrola (1999-2000), the band went on tour with the funk and hip hop band BE, coming from Hannover, booked and promoted by Four Artists Agency, Stuttgart. With their EMI-published singles “Smile (1999)” und “So many things (2000)”, the MIGHTY SLEEPWALKERS achieved a remarkable airplay with German and Benelux radio stations.

In 2001, for private reasons, Luc left the band and broke his contract with EMI Electrola…

After 25 years of silence, Luc G. Meessen, as a multi-instrumental musician, has decided to explore new musical fields. If the songs are mostly born and recorded home during the last years, they are partially re-arranged and mixed by Laurent Roo Eyen @ Koko Studio, Belgium.

The aim of this musical project is simple : to propose creative compositions with Belgian and international artists, renowned or not, targeting the beauty of the pieces, their stories, their depths. The melodic and lyrical returns are then recorded in the studio and mixed down to several formats.

These creative impulses once mixed together give then birth to a new music feeling, called pompously urban waves.

CURIOSITIES FROM THE PAST

AN OFFICIAL PRESS PHOTO

PLAYING MARTIN GUITARS...

I'm happy to record my songs with the Martin OMC Jacques Stotzem Signature, number 38 from the limited series of guitars built to the specific wishes of the famous Belgian guitarist and friend Jacques Stotzem. The guitar is based on the OM21 model, and therefore has a lot of the specifications of this guitar : a low-profile neck with a 43mm wide nut with high frets on the ebony fingerboard ; a 645mm scale length and 16" radius are identical to the OM-21 style.

The cutaway also makes the higher frets easy to reach, and the Fishman Ellipse Blend system allows the guitar to be used amplified too. This guitar is a very special one, with a lot of volume and sound projections. The notes ring out with power and still remain clear. The guitar sounds absolutely incredible! There were only a handful of these made.

LONG STORY SHORT... (1/2)

1/2

This group of four musicians, formed in late 1996 as a trio, got their start in a German garden. Inspired by rock, blues, and soul-rock, they brilliantly alternated between double bass and guitar. This was followed by around thirty concerts, most of which were played in concert halls in the Aachen region of the Rhineland.

In January 1997, their first CD, Can't Sleep, Gotta Walk, was produced. In March 1997, the Mighty Sleepwalkers were called upon to defend their colors at the Euregio Rockdag '97 in Tongeren (B). On this occasion, they were promoted to best band in the Euregio for the quality of their compositions, melodies, and performances. This marked the start of official CD launch concerts not only in Belgium but also in Germany and the Netherlands.

1997 was a particularly interesting and eventful year for the Mighty Sleepwalkers. The band attracted the attention of radio stations: live concert on BRF, appearances on Radio21, BRTN (chosen as best CD of the week), RWI, and Radio Contact. Articles appeared in Stage, Teek, Eschweiler Zeitung, and Klenkes magazines. A winter tour of Fnac and Virgin Mega Store stores in Belgium put the Mighty Sleepwalkers on the front page of the Brussels Fnac agenda for the month of October.

In 1998, around twenty concerts were quickly organized, with festival organizers calling on the Mighty's from all over. They traveled to the Netherlands, Switzerland, and France. Once they got going, they won the international rock competition in Metz (France). The concert was recorded and they were interviewed, filmed, and broadcast that same evening on FR3.

In 1999, Berlin producer Thommy Hein, renowned for having produced or worked with Germany's biggest names (Nina Hagen, Die Ärzte, Nena, etc.), recorded the second CD, the single Smile, in a large studio. This recording led the band to get in touch with EMI Germany, based in Maarweg, Cologne. This was followed by endless negotiations with the major label and the big publisher Kick Music (promoter of the Rolling Stones, for example).

CD COVER FOR THE SECOND SINGLE

Released in 2001, here is the CD Cover of the single "So many things".

LONG STORY SHORT... (2/2)

2/2

A contract was signed for two singles, with the possibility of an extension if the radio followed suit. Smile was rearranged in Berlin and achieved a good airplay rate. POPKOMM in Cologne allowed The Mighty to establish themselves in the eyes of all as a Belgian band in their own right. German festivals followed, including the Rheinaue Festival in Bonn, where they played at around 7 p.m. in front of nearly 200,000 amazed people who were waiting in particular for K's Choice and Tito & Tarantula! Smile was then distributed throughout Europe via EMI International.

So Many Things, their second single, was recorded in 2000 in Stuttgart-Leonsberg, at the famous Bauerstudio (Miles Davis, etc.) with the help of Dieter Falk (PUR, Patricia Kaas, etc.) and Peter Schmitz (Echt, Rammstein, Seelig, Kung Fu, etc.). It was a legendary weekend that produced what is perhaps the Mighty Sleepwalkers' best studio work.

But the radio stations weren't interested. The airplay disappointed the producers and EMI, who dropped the band after making one last attempt to get them on the music business track: a huge tour was launched with the EMI band Be. They traveled all over Germany. Sometimes they played two concerts a day... the show must go on! Nothing worked. Disappointment, frustration... on top of that, for artistic reasons, the Mighty Sleepwalkers lost their guitarist... and therefore their composer.

But it takes more, much more to stop the Mighty. They took a step back, restructured, composed, locked themselves in the studio and recorded. They reestablished contacts with the music world, Kick Edition decided to support them, ASS Booking in Hamburg organized a few gigs for them in Europe, including one in Spain... And just like that, the band was back!

The album released today is a collection of these experiences. Recorded in the good old-fashioned way, it proves that going back to your roots is always a sign of renewed creativity. And its nonchalance is simply a testament to the SMILE we should wear in this strange life... Try to keep my smile…

Written by The Mighty Sleepwalkers, Aachen, 2001.
